Denver, October 27 (RMMW) - As election day approaches, local TV newscasts are filled with political advertising but contain little meaningful election news according to a study released today by Rocky Mountain Media Watch.

Analysis of 128 evening newscasts from 25 states on October 20, 21 and 22, two weeks before election day, revealed four times as many political ads as there were election news stories. The programs averaged 1.3 election news items and 5.5 political commercials per newscast. Forty-seven news programs had zero election news.

Only 10 news stories about U.S. Senate races were noted in the sample compared to 105 ads for Senate races. Similarly, 11 stories about U.S. Congress races were counted while 138 ads for congressional candidates were broadcast. When gubernatorial races were considered, there were 36 news items and 120 ads. Twenty-four stories were about ballot initiatives compared to 168 ads about these referenda. The single largest block of election news concerned minor details about the presidential sex scandal.

"With a few exceptions, TV journalists are abandoning their responsibility to inform us about the candidates in a fair, and balanced way," said Paul Klite, RMMW Director. "Political advertising is spin, not news. When what we know about our leaders comes from TV ads, our democracy is in trouble."

"With only a week to go before election day, we call on stations to increase and improve their election coverage immediately," said Klite. "Polls, debates and web sites are no substitute for solid reporting about candidates' backgrounds and beliefs."

A list of stations included in the survey are on RMMW's web site at www.bigmedia.org. RMMW is a Denver based nonprofit that challenges the local TV news industry to broadcast better news.
