HOST RANDY CORPORON:

  • At the forefront of the Hudak recall, and it was so successful, she then decided to throw her hat in the ring.  I always respect people who are willing to put themselves on the line like you have

CANDIDATE FOR COLORADO STATE SENATE, LAURA WOODS:

  • good morning

CORPORON:

  • so many people who didn’t follow the recalls in CO, let’s talk about that history

WOODS:

  • such a liberty movement, a grassroots movement
  • Started by Victor Head with the Pueblo freedom fighters in Pueblo
    • Recall of Giron
    • We drove down and helped
    • I had been working the FIRST hudak recall—I wasn’t a main player in that effort
      • After we closed down our effort
      • We decided to help with the recalls in Southern CO
      • I went to Pueblo
        • Hung out at the Wal-Mart gathering sigs
        • Went back down to help get out the vote
  • We restarted the Hudak effort in the fall, at the beginning of October

[The following section is transcribed from Woods’ interview with Corporon.]

CORPORON:

  • Well, and I loved it, because the Hudak recall was the first of the recalls that was considered, and it was determined to not be viable, apparently, so others picked up the recall ball, and after two successful campaigns we came back to Hudak.  And guess what!  She left too.

WOODS:

  • Yeah.

CORPORON:

  • So, now there’s an appointed Democrat there – Rachel Zenzinger.

WOODS:

  • That’s correct.

CORPORON:

  • And twenty-two days from now, people are going to have to choose who’s running on the Republican side of the equation.  So, let’s talk about you and why you threw your hat into this ring.

WOODS:

  • Well, thank you.  I decided to get into this race in December, because I sat down with my primary opponent [Lang Sias] for lunch.  And I didn’t feel like he was conservative enough to represent this district and to fight for this seat that we had just opened up.  Plus, also, when I asked him the question, “Do you want to be our Senator?”, I couldn’t get a straight answer to that question.  So, we left that meeting – my husband and I–not really clear if he wanted the job. It’s December.  County assemblies are in March.  We just started praying about, you know, somebody has got to be in this seat.  And I had had people suggest to me it should be me.  It was the furthest thing from my mind at the time.  But, as we were looking for closed doors, doors kept opening and it just became clear that I wasn’t stepping out to do this on my own.  This was God directing me to do it in a real sense.  And so I got into the race in early January.  And then my primary opponent got into the race after I did — about ten days, two weeks after I did.

CORPORON:

  • Oh, very, very interesting. So, when he realized that there was going to be competition, somehow, he decided to step up and jump in.

WOODS:

  • Correct.

CORPORON:

  • Well, I don’t know his view of the story.  Your website is laurawoodsforsenate.org.  You’ve got all kinds of information about you, about the issues, who has endorsed you, et cetera.  And you’ve got on the very front page, “Why I’m running for Senate.”  I just love this list.  Go ahead and share some of your ideas with your audience please.

[The following represents notes taken during this interview.]

WOODS:

  • I’m frustrated with where CO is heading in the last 6-8 years.
    • As a native – grew up in the mountains on a ranch
    • I’m concerned for future generations
      • Grandchildren
      • I’m looking around wondering, what are we going to hand to them?
        • How many trillions of dollars of debt?
  • Legislature that refuses to listen to constituents
    • That’s why we got rid of Hudak
    • Zenzinger votes against Marbles CCSS delay bill
    • She voted for the voter fraud bills
    • She voted to give money to her friends in green energy and construction

CORPORON:

  • On front page of website… words I’m not used to… passionate about Constitution, Declaration of Independence, Bill of rights

WOODS:

  • They have everything to do with politics
  • We swear to uphold the Constitution
    • We stand for Liberty
    • TABOR
    • CUT pledge
    • Hallmarks in CO history and CO government

CORPORON:

  • Frustrating how fast they forget about their oath.  Seems like they don’t even bother to read the legislation they shove down our throats

WOODS:

  • Isn’t Justin Everett a shining example of rep who reads every bill and stands for principles
  • It’s not easy to stand by principles.
    • But I’m like Justin
    • I’ll fight for principle
    • I’m the only candidate in my race to sign the CUT Pledge
      • I’m going to stand with we,, the people
      • If you don’t sign, you choose to stand with government
        • You’ll raise taxes

CORPORON:

  • Controversial issues –like traditional family values
  • [commercial break]
  • CALLER CHERYL (from Westminster):  thanks for the recalls.  How do you see yourself different from Sias?

WOODS:

  • We do have a choice—so this is an important distinction
  • I will sign the CUT pledge – he has not
  • I will reach out to UAs and Libertarians –
    • They trust my liberty message
    • They know I’m good at uniting these constitution loving people
    • I’ve never donated money to a Dem candidate – he has
    • I’ve been a Republican for as long as I can remember – not him, he’s a recent convert
    • I’m not afraid to put controversial tough issues on my website
      • I won’t shy away from principle
      • I’ll stand by them
      • I will talk about them
      • If you want to know where I stand, just ask me.

CORPORON:

  • I’ve talked to Lang.  He’s a good guy.  But he’s run before, hasn’t won.  At won point he had a political advertisement that included a pic of him with supporters, and a sign saying “Tea Party endorsed” in 2010  — In a future race (2012), that phrase was photoshopped out

WOODS:

  • Yes, it IS a concern
  • History of affiliation
    • 2000 he was registered UA or independent voter
    • In 2003 he became a Dem
    • In 2006 he went back to being UA
    • In 2007 became a Republican
    • It’s that same kind of blowing in the wind that we can’t afford to have in our state Senate

CORPORON:

  • CALLER ROBIN:  I worked on recalls with Laura, and I want people to know, what you hear is what you get.  She’s principled, passionate, put forth 110%, she’s who we need to get CO back on track
  • How much did you pay these people?  Ha Ha.  Always risky taking calls.   I always ask candidates if they want calls, cuz you don’t want to catch somebody off guard, with some oppositional research coming out, — and you said, “Yeah, bring it on” I respect that a lot
  • Smear campaign in this primary:  I don’t know if it’s started by Lang…

WOODS:

  • There certainly is a smear campaign
    • If coming from the Dems, it shows who they really fear, who scares the crap out of the Dems
    • If it’s coming from Rs, then Lang needs to repudiate anybody who is saying these things
      • Because they’re all lies
      • Its an anonymous website – no names put to it,
      • I answer these questions when asked… but I’m not going to acknowledge what they say because I don’t want to give it any traction or roots, because it’s all lies

CORPORON:

  • You’ve got great endorsements – besides myself

WOODS:

  • Ken Clark – you guys are champions of Liberty
  • Bill Armstrong
  • Sen. Ted Harvey – you want to talk about Freedom Fighters
  • Justin Everett
  • Kevin Lundberg
  • Dave Schultheis – CO Springs, conservative and principled Senator,
  • Chris Holbert

CORPORON:

  • Senator Ted Harvey will fill in for me tomorrow as host.  Bill Armstrong is principled, although others accuse him of being establishment R.  You can question some of his decisions – he makes some ‘big picture’ decisions.  I think his endorsement is huge.
  • Drilling down into some of the issues:  Guns… started the recalls.  How would you attack this gun legislation?

WOODS:

  • We need to repeal all the laws passed in the 2013 session
  • Then move forward with gun rights bills
    • Constitutional carry bill
    • This goes right back to the Constitution and we need to defend it at all costs

CORPORON:

  • Healthcare:  lots of Rs are going squishy on repeal of Obamacare.  Where do you come down on state exchange and Obamacare

WOODS:

  • We need to get out from under socialized healthcare
  • It doesn’t work
  • We need to open the insurance market across state lines
    • Or we should be able to buy it from Costa Rica
    • I don’t care
    • Free market system
    • Socialized medicine is a train wreck
    • I would work to get us out of Amycare

CORPORON:

  • Description of District

WOODS:

  • [describes her district]

CORPORON:

  • Lincoln dinner in Broomfield tomorrow night, with Derrick Wilburn as keynote.  Will you be there?

WOODS:

  • Other engagement – meet and greet coffee
  • Appreciate Rick Fernandez, his work in Broomfield, he’s a freedom fighter for sure

[The following section is transcribed from Woods’ interview with Corporon.]

CORPORON:

  • Well, that’s understandable We had a caller, Peggy, who wanted to get your position and your perspective education, including, of course, the hot topic of the day, across the nation–Common Core.

WOODS:

  • I am a believer in empowering teachers.  I want teachers to be empowered to use the skills that they’ve been given to teach our kids, and mold and shape creative geniuses to come out of our schools.  For that to happen, we need to get Common Core out of our schools.  I’m in favor of parental choice where school is concerned.  I would be very much in favor of a voucher system for schools.  And I would support private school, home school, charter school, public school, across the board, evenly, so that parents have the choice in whatever they choose, their kids get the best education possible

[The following represents notes taken during this interview.]

CORPORON:

  • So you’re in a hotly contested battle in SD-19.  How can people get on board and help

WOODS:

  • Laurawoodsforsenate.org
  • Donate—we need money—very expensive primary
  • Like FB page
  • Tell your friends – especially unaffiliateds to register as R and vote for me in primary
    • They are UA for a reason—the party has let them down
    • We understand that
    • But we have to make a difference THROUGH a Party
