HOST JOHN RUSH:

  • District description
  • Who are you running against, and what will you change

GOP CANDIDATE FOR HOUSE DISTRICT 33, MARIJO TINLIN:

  • I think it’s a purple state
  • Diane Primavera
    • Back after defeat by Don Beazley
  • District is:
    • Equal Ds and Rs
    • Unaffiliateds outnumber both Rs and Ds
  • I have experience in Biz world
    • Working with entrepreneurs
      • Consulting on marketing
      • Etc
    • Our regulations are prohibitive for
      • Starting new biz
      • Expanding biz
    • Biz personal Property tax
      • Changed last year to $15,000
      • It was a wash, taking fees into consideration
      • All small biz owners hate that tax
      • Would like to see it at $50,000
      • Or Centennial $70,000

RUSH:

  • It’s a de-incentivizing tax,…. You get taxed for eons, eventually goes away

TINLIN:

  • Last session 1033 was defeated
  • Would have lowered fines for biz owners
    • They don’t even know they’re violating regs
    • They’re just trying to conduct biz
  • BB has pointed out
    • People are struggling
    • Ad neighbors are thriving
  • Marijuana biz is going well

RUSH:

  • We incentivize big companies but leave small biz in the lurch.  Would be nice to put some incentives into place to allow hiring extra people, and giving those biz a benefit, and reduces red tape

TINLIN:

  • We need to talk about those kinds of things — as a state
  • We have good benefit packages for worker’s comp that we’re trying not to mess up
  • We need to figure out how to open doors to businesses

RUSH:

  • After break — education and school chose
  • [commercial break]
  • Reminding listeners:  Diane Primavera voted for election modernization laws and gun laws… if we want to oppose those things we have to get rid of the people who put them in place

TINLIN:

  • You should have the choice to own a gun
  • Choice to use a gun

RUSH:

  • Schools

TINLIN:

  • I see happening with states’ adopting Common Core
    • We’re teaching to the texst
    • And it’s all headed toward College readiness
      • Not for every kid
      • Not every kid will be good at the areas that we’re testing
        • Fine arts
        • Tech and vocational tracks
        • Their needs aren’t being met with these standards and assessments
    • Teachers are being evaluated on these tests

RUSH:

  • You are not a big fan of Common core

TINLIN:

  • I am not
  • I am not against standards
  • And we need some form of assessments

RUSH:

  • We DO need standards, accountability for graduates having basic skills  — how do we get there, and how you chose to educate your child should be up to YOU, not the state

TINLIN:

  • We’re trying to fit these kids into this one box
  • That takes freedoms from students parents and teachers
  • Teachers need flexibility
    • Being forced into specifics
    • Not necessarily the best way to learn
  • I have two middle schoolers
    • Sometikmes they have no homework
    • Because it’s one test or another

RUSH:

  • The left is indoctrinating our kids with what they think needs to be taught.  We need to reclaim our kids’ education

TINLIN:

  • Absolutely
  • Often my kids talk about what they are learning, and I have to head it off — prod them to think about what’s being taught… think critically

RUSH:

  • What can you do as an elected to make those changes happen

TINLIN:

  • Sen. Marbles bipartisan bill should have passed
    • Put brakes on CC
    • Step back and reflect
    • Why didn’t we pilot CC in one or two districts instead of simoultaneously rolling it out across the nation

RUSH:

  • Because not as much money to be made

TINLIN:

  • That’s right
  • Ed reform:  is like trying to change a tire while the car is still moving
  • Sweeping changes like that can be dangerous
  • We should go slower
  • Lots of kids being forced into college and their not ready =– they need remedial instruction

RUSH:

  • My kids saw friends in that boat — my kids were fine after attending private schools.  They graduated in 4 years, not 5 or 6.  Where did we mess up, that people don’t know and don’t meet requirements

TINLIN:

  • Good question
  • I’m worried that we’ll be like Soviet USSR where you’re told what you’ll study and what you’ll practice
  • I wrote that book
  • We have to fight for freedom

RUSH:

  • Only way to change direction from Communist/Socialist/Marxist is to elect the right people
  • How do we make this happen in the next week

TINLIN:

  • Vote!!!
