[00:00:00] John Hickenlooper invited, but shocker took a pass, Senator ignore. But it was worth it and it was worth every minute of it. Let’s go to the VIP line and welcome Senator Cory Gardner. John Hickenlooper, invited by chocker, took a pass. Senator Gardner, welcome back to The Daine Catalist Show.

[00:00:17] Good afternoon, Dan. Thank you for having me. You can still find that debate on the Pueblo Chieftain Web site. So, you know, it takes some time and hopefully your listeners will look at it or listen to it or both.

[00:00:27] Boy, I sure hope that they do, because whether you watch it, whether you listen to it or both, you get the message. It’s clear this was not close at all. I’ve never seen anything like it in my short time on this planet. I mean, it was it was just devastating. So what I wanted to ask you, Senator, in the few minutes we have together and thank you for your time. Which of the exchanges slash concession’s slash Kimberly caught a meltdown because he didn’t start crying or anything like that. He just he just didn’t even try to answer. Often when you pose these great direct questions from what do you think are the most significant points to come out of the debate?

[00:01:06] Well, I think you get the sense that this is all about him and not about the people of Colorado specifically, and particularly when he fails to answer the question of why he won’t repay the taxpayers for his lawyer that the taxpayers had to pay for when he violated the state’s constitution because he said when there’s a lawsuit, it’s a quote unquote, attack on the office of the governor.

[00:01:29] I know what right there, an ethics investigation. It ethics and the governor action is an attack on the governor.

[00:01:37] That’s who he thinks he is above the law. And different than you, I. Can you imagine if you and I absconded and didn’t listen to a or a reply or respond to a legally binding subpoena? Oh, my goodness. Contempt with it. I mean, it’s just a double standard. The governor is in it for himself. The last thing we need in Washington is somebody who’s going to fit in in Washington. And that’s why we can’t vote for John Hickenlooper.

[00:02:02] Yeah. And I hope that point of him ignoring a valid subpoena which had been upheld by a Denver district court before he ignored it. I hope everybody everywhere comes to understand that before they cast their ballot, because that’s one of those things, I think, Senator, that cuts through the noise. And I think you made that point very effectively over and over again. You’re talking about stuff here that goes way beyond the normal disagreement on issues that characterizes these races. I mean, it’s just bizarre behavior.

[00:02:30] It is and, you know, he he talks about 91 other charges were dismissed and they were not dismissed. Yeah, they were outside the statute of limitations and I offered him a chance to waive the statute of limitations.

[00:02:42] I refused to do so.

[00:02:43] I’m not surprised, but it would be nice if he repaid the people for his violations of the law and if he actually was honest and waived the statute of limitations so we could. No, I mean, did he fly to Honolulu on a corporate jet that he flies to the Maldives on Longbridge that we just don’t know?

[00:02:59] Well, one thing I among many I really admired Friday night was the way that that you just took to him, eyeball to eyeball. I mean, you know how some people take shots at somebody from a distance or on Twitter or something like that. But when they’re face to face the welt, you in your opening statement in a very appropriate way, came right out at him on all of this. And he literally had no answer of substance. It was either this goofy. They need to fire the consultant who came up with this wall of words thing that he kept every time you said something he couldn’t respond to with logic or fact or anything else, which was almost all the time, he’d just say, wall of words. Wall of words. I mean, what was it like inside the studio?

[00:03:41] Well, it was pretty incredible because you could tell that he he doesn’t want to be there and he doesn’t really. Why? Because he thinks he already BS already should be in Washington. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if they bought a house in Washington already. You know, he’s tried for a very long time to get there. He hired a PR firm to be vice president for Hillary Clinton. That failed. He ran for president. That obviously failed. Now, the consolation prize is the U.S. Senate. And I’m doing everything I can to make sure he fails. But the guy has tried to get it out of Colorado any way he can. And I think that is another sign. Why is this so concerning? And so is lie. But look, there’s gonna be another debate tomorrow from four o’clock in the afternoon to 5:00 on Telemundo. Tune in and watch the debate. We’ve already recorded it. We recorded it yesterday. So I hope people will listen to it. It’s gonna be on their website. You can download it. We actually you talked about an issue that came up on your show in an interview with him several months ago.

[00:04:40] A while, so did the issue of late term abortion and whether a baby born alive following or abortion is entitled to medical care. Is that the one? Because I vividly remember that conversation.

[00:04:52] That’s exactly right. Or a question came up during that debate on matters of life. And I highlighted the fact that he couldn’t even answer a question of whether he opposed infanticide and that that happened on your show. And it clearly in this exchange that you’ll hear tomorrow between four to five on Telemundo, you can hear him and how you know, how how how unfettered access to abortion is something that he is campaigning on.

[00:05:16] I’ll tell you, I was going to watch it anyway, but now I can’t wait. So Senator Cory Gardner gasp because truly that is so revealing about him. And then a one point nine, no win laga. Since joining us later in the show, the Gazette editorial or the editorial gardener shellacked Hickenlooper in first U.S. Senate debate. He’s going to talk about this as well. But when at one point in the debate, Senator, he was just so beaten down, he just blurted out and and I was texting with somebody and I just texted kindergarden. He just blurted out, Cory Gardner hates Denver. It’s like, where did that come from?

[00:05:56] I mean, you know, it’s a great question of a guy who doesn’t even know if he would know what he was doing, what he was. They didn’t even relate to any clue what was going on.

[00:06:05] It didn’t, you know. But but let me ask you this. You kept trying to and you did as much as anybody could expose the fact. PIN him down on the fact that. Wait a second. He had his own separate health care plan different from what he proposes to inflict on the American people now with John Kasuke. And he kept trying to deny it. At one point, it spurred one of the classic images of all time. I hope we sit in a lot of campaign ads of Hickenlooper just grabs a water bottle and he’s rolling his eyes. I mean, again, it’s like kindergarten. But but he did have his own separate health plan now that he doesn’t want to admit to.

[00:06:40] Well, it’s interesting because that came up at the debate that will air tomorrow, four to five on Telemundo as well. And a Hill high, said, governor, because he accused me of not telling the truth as a governor. Those are your words. That was your plan. And, you know, he he has a hard time admitting because, you know, here’s a guy who it’s all about him and he’s going to do whatever he can to get elected. I mean, my gosh, we were on Telemundo and and it’s this debate.

[00:07:06] And he did when he ran for the governor. He was actually trying to get to the right of Tom Tancredo on immigration and was bragging about the fact that he sent a list of eight thousand names to ICE for deportation. So that happened when he was running for governor. And now, of course, he’s somebody who is trying to cover that up. You accuse me of lying about that, too. But we’ll be sending the video out so people can see it.

[00:07:32] Wow. And Senator Cory Gardner, our guest in and thinking back to your point about how this guy’s been trying to get out of Colorado forever. Do you remember when he was mayor? And then there was the the vacant seat, the Senate seat that that came open, that Michael Bannered eventually got a Hickenlooper was lobbying hard for that, openly for that. So he wanted to get out of Colorado while he was still married. Denver.

[00:07:54] But, yeah, you know, it’s I think the reason I ran for the Senate was to try to keep Washington out of the Colorado. He is running for the Senate to get out of Colorado. That’s the big difference.

[00:08:06] Crazy. And, Senator, can you fill everybody in on the rest of the debate schedule as well? Because finally, you guys are going to be a while Telemundo, and that’ll be fantastic. And then you’re going to be on additional Denver TV soon. And then finally, one that actually goes an hour and a half televised. Is that right?

[00:08:24] That’s right. So we actually have the hour and a half televised one coming up on Friday of this week. And I’m looking at the calendar right now just so I make sure I give you the right information. It’s going to be televised. I think we start at five. The debate starts at 5:00 and it goes to six thirty. That’s on ABC Channel seven. That’s The Denver Post, called a public radio hosting it. And then, of course, that’ll be available on their Web site as well. That’s an hour and a half long. I think they’re showing the whole thing. And then this Friday, starting at five o’clock and then on the 13th, I believe October will be with Channel nine and Colorado politics as well.

[00:08:59] Yeah. And look forward to that. Also, finally, if you have another second, it one thing that I think we should see more of in debates and you did very effectively, is you posed very fair, direct questions to John Hickenlooper on major issues. And he repeatedly refused to answer you or refused to answer you substantively. And I think that is so revealing to the consumer, the voter. And I think we should see that all the time from people. Do you intend to continue to do that? Because I think that Kyle Clark has been tweeting out. I think I think not so subtle warnings that he’s not going to permit that in the last debate. But I hope that you continue to do that. I think that’s what people imagine a true debate to be and what they want to see.

[00:09:46] Well, I think too many times the moderators try to become the store, right? They tried to be the ones to make the news, to make the moment, to get the clicks.

[00:09:53] What’s wrong with a Lincoln Douglas style debate where you simply have several hours where you can have a conversation and question each other and go back and forth, you know? And, you know, it’s I do think the people of Colorado need to know why. When John Hickenlooper says he wants Corona virus relief, then why did he oppose coronavirus? Really? Yeah, I think that’s a that’s a pretty good question, too, to ask in 60 seconds. So it’s going to give you 60 seconds of his excuses and say, oh, that’s just a wall of words that you said. And I think that’s what he’s going to try to hide behind. It is his, you know, fancy little la shucks isms. And it just it just doesn’t cut it for the people of Colorado known.

[00:10:35] And it was clear it did. It did not play well the other night as well. And listen, I’m not trying to blow smoke. I’m just telling people listening right now, it is worth your your time to make sure that you go see that debate, see the next one, etc.. Because I am telling you, I have never in my short life any way seen anybody in any setting even close to as good and and dominating as you were on Friday night. And with this grasp of the substance and the ability to communicate it and to be a happy warrior at the same time. That’s just a.. A world class levels. So. So why keep it up and then look forward to the next one?

[00:11:13] Well, thank you, Dan. Thanks for having me on and look forward to talking again soon.

[00:11:16] Thank you, my friend. Take care. That says Senator Cory Gardner. Eight five five four zero five eight two.
